Sajen Mathews, MD, Named New St. Jude CMO

As we searched for a new Chief Medical Officer (CMO), it quickly became apparent that the perfect person for the job was the individual who has played a pivotal role in St. Jude’s success over the last several years. I am very pleased to announce that Sajen Mathews, MD, St. Jude Heritage Medical Group, has accepted the CMO position.

A board-certified gastroenterologist with St. Jude Medical Center since 2001, Dr. Mathews has consistently earned some of the hospital’s highest patient reviews, while bringing persistence/diligence, collaboration and leadership to multiple roles. Ten years ago, as Director of Gastroenterology, his commitment to best practices and evidence-based care helped establish the hospital as a nationally recognized center of excellence in GI. Later, as Chairman of Patient Safety and Performance Improvement, he created focus and energy around the hospital’s key quality indicators, building physician participation and leadership to raise outcomes—an accomplishment that continues to earn the hospital awards today. During his tenure as Chief of Staff from 2017 through 2018, St. Jude led the Providence St. Joseph Health System in physician engagement and communication. As the current Medical Director of Clinical Informatics, he is helping St. Jude join the nation’s top hospitals in realizing the benefits of Epic.

In his new role, Dr. Mathews will be responsible for pharmacy, physician utilization, care management, medical staff and clinical informatics.

His talent, commitment and ability to engage those around him in pursuing quality make him a remarkable leader. But he is uniquely qualified for the CMO position in another way as well: he exemplifies the values that make our ministry distinctive. A Values in Action Award recipient for Excellence, he sets a very high standard, not only through words but through example as well. His combination of humor, humility, and kindness elevate interactions with physicians, caregivers and patients—making St. Jude a better place to give and receive care. The best part is he’s only getting started.

Please join me in thanking Sajen for joining the hospital’s executive leadership team, where he can continue to influence our exceptional culture and care.
